Both concern Hardy and his wife Emma: In the past I have often felt that while one could understand Finzi’s temperamental affinity with these texts—many of them appearing to be almost unsettable in their curious phraseology—the music and the words were not always happily matched.
When I failed at fervid rhymes, “Shall”, I said, “persist I? In sun, in rain? And we shall see the waters spring, Waters spring From chinks the scrubby copses crown; And we shall trace their oncreeping To where the cascade tumbles down And sends the bobbing growths aswing, And ferns not quite but almost drown. In the next song the words are as cunningly disposed, but to a bitter end as passion throbs in an old body.

The first song begins lyrically, with imitation in the piano part, as if all set for a closed form; but it slackens into quasi-recitative for the questioning fourth verse; has a Holstian march bass at the mention of passing time, and ends having started in A flat on a surprising chord of E major—all characteristic Finzi procedures.
Hill is excellent, too, in songs needing a nimble dexterity or sharp crispness—there may be a touch of strain in ”Budmouth Dears” A Young Man’s Exhortation but he takes it at the rattling pace Finzi asks for and every word emerges as bright as a button. Finzi and the other version: Still less in mien To my great sorrow became she slowly, And smalled till she was nought at all In his checkless griff; And it was as if She had never been.
Elsewhere, I find the large-scale setting of ”Channel Firing” a failure, nor do I greatly care for the heartiness of ”Budmouth Dears”, but compared with the dozens of successes, these will not detract from admiration for a major achievement.

Both have quite light, fine-textured voices listening to them in sequence on Side 2 one is scarcely aware for a moment or two that baritone has taken over from tenor and I will confess that I was apprehensive about this, fearing that the very biggest songs would be given a light-weight treatment.

Don’t show me this message again. Both singers are almost at their most impressive, in fact, in songs that you would scarcely have thought suited to them. Before and after Summer. They say he sees as an instant thing More clear than to-day, A sweet soft scene That once was in play By that briny green; Yes, notes alway Warm, real, and keen, What his back years bring – A phantom of his own figuring.
There was of course more to it than finzk. Both have swinging tunes which carry their narratives, but their form is modified to reflect change.
Rollicum-rorum, tol-lol-lorum, Rollicum-rorum, tol-lol-lay! His especial strength lies in shadings from colour to colour—the way that he can encompass both the tripping lightness and the later poignancy of ”Before and after Summer” is admirable, and he has a beautiful lyrical cantabile for such songs as ”Overlooking the River” Before and after Summer. A song like ”It never looks like summer here” is a microcosm of Hardy-Finzi, while in ”At a Lunar Eclipse” not even Britten could have supplied a setting more in keeping with the visionary philosophy of the words.

The thread is an emotional one, linking the young idealist as he matures to his gentle end under the yellowing trees. Lines are often hard-packed with crusty sounds and sometimes teasing inversions. Finzi’s word-setting has a farth flexibility that often responds unerringly to Hardy’s fantasy and his elaborately wrought prosody, but it can also do more: The last two songs are more astringent.
This is borne out by his copy of the Collected Poemsin which he has lightly crossed through those he has set, and marked those he would like to ahd.
